Dr. Zilch Biography
Dr. Zilch was formed in
late 1997 by Nuno Fadigas (Vocals), Eduardo Krithinas
(Guitars / Keyboards / Programming) and Roberto de Souza (Loops / Samples
/ Vocals).
The band recorded a three-track-demo at Roberto and Eduardo's Estúdio REC. About three months later, early in 1998, they were signing with Universal Music (PolyGram at the time). The photo on the left is part of the very first Dr. Zilch photo session. It was taken at Estúdio REC in 1998 for Correio da Manhã newspaper. Then came George Das Art (bass) and Pedro Pitta Groz (drums). At this time with a complete lineup, they start recording what would become "Artcore XXI". Their first live appearance was in August 15th 1998, opening for Senser at Praia de Mira Festival. After many other shows, they closed 1998 activities in December 19th, being the opening act for the British band Pitchshifter at Hard Club (Gaia). "Flesh Getting Higher" was the first single which included a powerful remix by the famous DJ XL-Garcia. The "Flesh Getting Higher" Video-Clip was recorded during February 1999. Its shocking uncensored version was continuously seen on Portuguese / Spanish TV Music Channel Sol Musica for several months. Other Portuguese channels like CNL, SIC Radical and even RTP 1 would give it some highlight.
Their debut album "Artcore XXI" was released in October 25th 1999 and received great critical acclaim. The second single "The Questioning Worm" was out in November 3rd. Between 1999 and 2000, the songs "Flesh Getting Higher" and "Human Shaped God" were included in 5 Portuguese compilations! Early in 2000, Eduardo Krithinas and Pedro Pitta Groz left the band and became part of two different mainstream projects. Fernando MC and Henrique Guerra took their places. During 2001, the band decided for not releasing the second album by Universal Music and broke up with the label. A few months later George was replaced by Brr (ex-Mata Ratos).
In 2002, Dr. Zilch formed their own label Artcore Records and released "21 Rarities from Artcore & More!". A compilation of 21 tracks in CD-R format, including the "Artcore XXI" demos, live recordings, unreleased tracks and an acoustic remix of "Put Yourself Away"! Focusing energies in making new songs, the band continued playing live and they even opened for Moonspell in June 9th. During 2003, Dr. Zilch recorded three songs at Estúdio REC for "Promo 2003". The first track was "Homem do Leme"; a cover song from one of the biggest Portuguese Rock Bands: Xutos & Pontapés. This song got great critical acclaim and some airplay on mainstream radios such as Rádio Comercial. In 2004, the band went back to studio and started recording "A Little Taste of Hell Vol.1". The album was mastered in late December by Björn Engelmann (Rammstein, Clawfinger, Backyard Babies, In Flames, Hypocrisy, etc.). In September 11th 2005, "A Little Taste of Hell Vol.1 - The Way Down" was finally released! "Games of Wonder" was the first single taken from this new album. During 2006 it could be heard in a daily basis on Portuguese radio stations including the mainstream Best Rock FM. It was Dr. Zilch's song having the greatest airplay ever!!!
Even the American Platinum Blue Music
Intelligence Inc.,
In 2007 even Rolling Stone website gave them some exposure! By then, among several Portuguese compilations, Dr. Zilch was included in international compilations for the first time as well. The chosen songs were "Another Sucker" and "Games Of Wonder". Meanwhile, Universal Music decided distributing the 1999's debut album "Artcore XXI" for download worldwide. Early in 2008, "Made In Hell" single and Video-Clip were released. "Made In Hell" Video-Clip got some exposure at Sic Radical TV Station in a censored version! By September, Sérgio Pereira replaced Henrique Guerra on drums.
2009 started with the recording of a
cover song from the 80's... Ready since February, it would be released by October.
